So, this is pretty obvious, you all have heard this I'm sure, but still, this is the role I have, in some sense, taken on for myself. Kristof writes today about Mukhtaran Bibi, a young woman who was sentenced to be gang raped by a group of her village elders in order to punish her brother for supposedly walking next to a girl from another village. Instead of killing herself, like she was supposed to, she made a stink. Americans sent her about $130K and she has used the money to build schools. Her attackers were tried, convicted, had their convictions overturned, convicted again. Then the Pakistani government kidnapped Bibi, just as she was finalizing plans to come visit the U.S., and her attackers were set free.
What do y'all, who are much more culturally relativistic than me, feel about this situation. You can probably guess what I want to say to President Musharraf right now. My friend, Andrew usually bothers me with his desire to convert the entire Muslim world to Christianity, but if that's not the answer, how do we stop this culturally-ingrained horror?

I think Kristof's suggestion that our government get off its ass and say something is a good one (write your reps, folks; http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/ is a good resource for contacting them). Convert those fundamentalist whackos to Christianity and you'll have whacko fundamentalist Christians who gang-rape erring women (or women whose brothers err--I'd love to hear the logic behind that bit of displacement). Mukhtaran Bibi is right that education is our best hope, and the enlightened governments of the free world (there's your relativism, Tyler) could help with that. Replacing one religion with another, esp with the other crusader one, doesn't seem like such a hot idea.
Enlightened western liberalism is a religion. That's why the fundamentalists are so pissed off.
That's what I was going for: evangelical liberal relativism. God forbid we should try to convert muslim fundamentalists to christian ones. I was suggesting the evangelical methodology, not the evangelical cosmology.
I think schools'd be the most effective means of this evangelism. I do believe that after our next enlightened president starts building these schools all over the Muslim world, there will be a huge backlash from muslim parents against our indoctrinating their children with our infidel ways. I hope I'm wrong.

The religion of Islam does not cause this type of behavior...i just wanted to make that clear! If the men want to do certain things or act a certain way no one has the right to blame their behavior on Islam. I don't u have the right to feel someone's religion is the trouble.

Look, I care about the root cause of honor killings only insofar as it might help us eliminate them. I have no particular bone to pick with Islam. If the faith isn't responsible for the oppression of Muslim women, who do seem to get it worse than those in Christian, Jewish, Buddhist or any other religion, what is? Why are women treated so badly in Saudi Arabia, in Pakistan?
